Building

In a momentous collaboration, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Sioux Empire and the Sioux Falls School District are proud to announce the launch of a new initiative that will improve and enhance youth programming. This exciting project will kick-off with Sioux Falls’ first out-of-school time Club being built on to George McGovern Middle School, marking a pivotal moment in both organizations’ commitment to providing the best possible education and support for Sioux Falls middle school students.

With the ability to serve at least 300 students each day, the Club will provide new services and opportunities for George McGovern students and their families after school, on non-school days and weekdays during the summer months. The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Sioux Empire will cater to the specific needs of middle school students, ensuring they have a safe, nurturing, and educational environment to thrive in during out-of-school time hours.

The Club, funded by generous donors, will feature over 16,000 square feet of space dedicated to helping young people reach their full potential, to include:

·       A STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, music) classroom

·       An innovation lab

·       A teaching kitchen

·       A full-sized gymnasium

·       Social spaces

“We already have an incredible teen program, from academic support and mentorship to recreational activities and career guidance, that we’ll soon be able to offer in this new building attached to the middle school,” says Stacy Jones, Chief Executive Officer for Boys & Girls Clubs of the Sioux Empire. “We’ll truly be meeting the students where they are at and delivering the same great support with innovative programs, such as STEAM, culinary, healthy lifestyles, tutoring, athletic camps, Taekwondo, volunteering, community partnerships, and workforce development, including career exploration using virtual reality goggles, mentorships and so much more. And as part of this program, we include meals and snacks too.”

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Sioux Empire and the Sioux Falls School District recognized the barriers some middle school students face when accessing quality programming for out-of-school hours, and looked for a solution to serve more local youth. This project will transform the way the two organizations can serve students, foster their growth, and prepare them for a successful future. Based on proven outcomes from similar clubs around the country, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Sioux Empire and the Sioux Falls School District are confident a facility connected to the school will eliminate many of the challenges seen for impacted families, such as lack of transportation and/or financial means to access community programs and resources.

Superintendent Dr. Jane Stavem said, “We are truly changing the landscape of free-time for preteens and teens in Sioux Falls. We are excited about this development, and so grateful to our philanthropic community partners for stepping up to share the vision for quality, structured, after-school programs. Their support means that, together, we can offer students expanded learning and enrichment, leadership opportunities, and family support to build lasting benefits for the city of Sioux Falls.”

In a strong partnership, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Sioux Empire and the Sioux Falls School District share a vision for a more impactful environment for youth and are excited for this monumental project moving them toward achieving their shared goal of serving more youth.

Construction on the new Boys & Girls Club at George McGovern Middle School is expected to begin spring 2024 with an opening by fall 2025.
